There are reports (https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=122113952649394301) that the Iowa State Fair gave Rob Sand a moment of action that never worked for my mom when it was her term to do dishes.

My mom and her two brothers were tasked on a rotating basis to wash the evening meal dishes every day.  Not a difficult task but one that we always wish someone else would do. I remember my grandmother and my uncles who telling me that my mom had this crazy idea that if she went to the bathroom and took a long time, that the dishes would be washed by someone else.  Unfortunately for her the dishes were still there to be washed.

There were a number of people who had questions for Rob Sand regarding his record and his past.  At that time he headed to a bathroom stall.  He was there for fifteen minutes.

In fairness, going to the bathroom now days is not like it was twenty years ago or so.  Back then you would be seen with the newspaper or a magazine.  These days our smartphones can cause an easy fifteen plus minute trips to the restroom. I have no problem with him using the facilities.  After all, there are times you need to get the ---- out and it can take a bit of time.  HIPAA prevents us from asking what was going on in there.

 

Also, to be fair, anyone who has watched Happy Days remembers the Fonz using his Office. But when the Fonz exited his office he dealt with people head on.

Reports say that when Sand left the bathroom he did not want to talk to those who were pressing him and decided to leave the fair. I get that a candidate needs to have space.  But what we have been getting from Rob Sand is a carefully prepared presentation. When challenged or asked to go off script he seems to want to go away as he did in this case.

So far I have been working hard to present both candidates objectively.  I have not voted in primary elections or gone to caucuses in order to keep my independence for editorial commentary. I have tried to stick to the candidate’s web sites and objective research.  My editorial commentary will offer suggestions on how to do things or how things might just resolve.

But in this case I will use personal experience to offer Rob Sand some help.

I grew up in a house that had 1.5 bathrooms.  One room had a sink, toilet and bathtub/shower.  The other had a sink and toilet. My siblings and I also would try my mom’s dish washing time tactics and hide in the half bath.  Just as it did not work for her it did not work for us.  When we came out of the bathroom the dirty dishes were still there to be washed. And, by the the water in the sink was cold so we had to work harder by draining the sink and putting in hot soapy water… more work.

 

Sand had the opportunity after the restroom stop to address the questioners.  Sure, it would have been a challenge.  Yes, someone would not like what he had to say.  But in all fairness his bathroom breaks  would be more credible in the future.  Sand now has the reputation that the bathroom is a place to hide and try to escape instead of a room with a purpose.
