There is work to be done. Budget is not in place. Flock cameras need to be addressed. Supposedly many bills have been passed by the House but the Senate is not acting on them.
Is this reason for the House not to be in session? Yes, it is an election year, but can the candidates be of more use to their constituents if they are in session working on things? The original schedule called for three weeks in session with one week off. Now the schedule is calling for one week on, one week off and two weeks on 48 hour call.
Congress needs to go back and look at what the Constitution states is the role of Congress. The big one is the budget and allocation of funds, spending taxpayer money. This has not been done for this session yet. It needs to be done. We have to have all members present to debate this.
I don’t care about the midterms coming up. There has been plenty of time during the current session that the candidates themselves could have presence in their district. If they would just do what they were hired to do, both parties, they could get work done and go to their districts and party. However, no playing until your work is completed.
This is where the House candidates need to have their organizations in place and use modern technology to communicate. There is no lack of podcasts, internet communications, social media, and neighbor door to door for candidates who want the job.
This could hurt a House member looking for a promotion to a different elected position, but they were hired for two years, not a year and a half. If productivity was truly measured in Washington D.C. the place would be in Chapter 11 at best and more likely Chapter 7 bankruptcies.
If you look at the history of the House and Senate, you will find it was a very part time position. Sessions were every two years unless there was an emergency. There was no salary, just a per Diem. It was not a career, but a break from their real occupation to make sure that the country that gave them the opportunity to do their thing.
Yes, the country had limits in the beginning, only land owners had a vote, but that gradually changed. A note on only landowners having a vote, while they looked to have fair rules, they also were not as a rule trying to siphon from the taxpayers for personal gain. I would have no problem dumping the existing setup, cleaning house and starting back as the constitution stated.
But for now I will just appreciate it if the House would meet according to plan, then get the bills passed and sent to the Senate. Speaker Johnson, it is up to you to publicize what has been passed and force the Senate to recognize their need to work and pass this stuff. Let the Senate say they won’t. Use social media to your advantage. If teenagers can become popular on social media so can you.
Just do your job!
