Greenland. A vast pile of ice covered land with a population of
about 56,000. The economy is mostly sealing, whaling, fishing,
hunting, and some mining.
So why does
President Trump bring up Greenland? Yes, there are minerals below
the frozen tundra. With the AI push happening there is a push to make
sure there are enough minerals to make the development needed for AI.
With the history of technology manufacturing having shifted to
communist Red China, Trump knows importance of domestic United States
manufacturing and also the importance of the supply chain. You do
not allow a country who has a history of dishonesty control your
destiny.
However, this is a
good guess, but not as I see the real reason. Trump is a builder by
trade. You cannot be a good builder without good planning. A good
planner has a good sense of history.
Currently there are
two dominant adversaries to the United States, Red China and Russia.
Red China has forever embraced communism with just enough capitalism
to fund its communism and central planning.
Russia is a vast and
somewhat rich land in certain natural resources which has a disputed
border history but in many ways is closer to American and European
ways than many want to accept. When the wall fell and Putin
eventually was elected in charge of Russia, Putin requested
membership to NATO and was rejected. This failure changed Putin from
possibly being transparent and negotiable to definite adversary.
Trump realizes that
there have been two “World Wars”. He also realizes that the
United States was twice a late entry into the world war process.
World War I started in Europe July 28, 1914 with Austria-Hungary
declared war on Serbia following the assassination of Archduke Franz
Ferdinand on June 28, 1914. The following is how the countries sided
prior to the Unites States involvement: Central Powers (Germany,
Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria) and the Allied
Powers (France, Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan).
The United States
joined with the Allied Powers April 6, 1917 while trying to stay
neutral. Reasons for entry included but are not exclusive to
“Unrestricted Submarine Warfare: In January 1917, Germany resumed
unrestricted submarine attacks on Allied and neutral shipping,
violating the earlier Sussex Pledge made after the sinking of the
French ship Sussex in 1916. This campaign led to the sinking of
multiple American merchant vessels in early 1917, resulting in
significant loss of American lives.
“The Zimmermann
Telegram: In February 1917, British intelligence intercepted and
shared with the U.S. a secret German telegram (the Zimmermann
Telegram) proposing a military alliance with Mexico if the U.S.
entered the war. The offer included German support for Mexico to
reclaim territories lost to the U.S., such as Texas, New Mexico, and
Arizona. The revelation outraged the American public and shifted
opinion decisively in favor of war.
“Public and
Political Shift: While President Wilson had been re-elected in 1916
on a platform of peace, growing public sentiment, fueled by the
submarine attacks and the Zimmermann Telegram, pressured the
government to act. Wilson framed the war as a moral crusade to "make
the world safe for democracy."”
World War II started
in September 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland using a
strategy known as Blitzkrieg. This aggressive military action
prompted Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany on
September 3, 1939, in fulfillment of their mutual defense treaties
with Poland. Japan had already been skirmishing on their own such as
their invasion of Manchuria in 1931 or the Second Sino-Japanese War
beginning in 1937.
The United States
again was trying to stay neutral but was supporting the Allies
through military aid and also a shoot on sight of German U-boats in
the Atlantic. Official entry in the war came on December 8, 1941 the
day after Japan did a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. There were
other actions happening with the war prior to this official
involvement including the Lend-Lease arrangement with Britain, Marine
assistance in Iceland and Newfoundland and US Navy escorts of British
ships.
The point is, the
United States was dragged in at the last minute effectively by Europe
twice in the twentieth century less than thirty years apart. Trump
has seen a major defense deficiency on the part of Europe developing.
The first part was the financial support of NATO and the European
countries past support which in most cases he increased.
Next is the
observation that twice under weak and almost non-existent American
leadership the Ukraine not once but twice was attacked by Russia
because of a border dispute. The Biden and the Obama administrations
(who can tell the difference) had some of the worst foreign policy
decisions. From the destruction of Libya to pullout in Afghanistan
sandwiched with payments and lifting of sanctions to Iran and twice
two invasions to Ukraine territory Trump looks to set it up be fore
it happens again.
Greenland is not
only strategic with vast mineral resources, but its proximity to the
United States makes is important for controlling access to the
country. The only direct route from Russia to the United States is
around Greenland. It is of the United States interest to keep
Russia, Red China, and other adversaries from having a place on
Greenland. Greenland is part of an area that the Golden Dome can
defend not only for Greenland but also for the United States for
North America.
Greenland has some
similarities to Hawaii. It is not part of the Unites States
mainland. It has strategic location for defense and communications.
Hawaii has its mineral source as does Greenland. Hawaii was once
attracted by an adverse nation at the time, it is a possibility for
Greenland.
In other words Trump
looks to prevent World War III by preparing. Preparing
diplomatically. Making NATO stronger by funding and participation.
Putting the rules in place so Russia, Red China and any other
adversaries will not only leave the United States alone, but to not
invade neighboring countries.
A novel approach.
Preparation. Definition. It makes more sense than not. Quite
logical as Spock would say. Look for more to come, but as many on
the USS Enterprise did not understand Spock, many do not understand
Trump.
