160 Fix Mess
Descriptions > White Backgrounds
I saw this meme this morning on Facebook:
The problem with the
logic is that these people have not held down the fort that long.
Every time a statement about a president that once they are gone the
mess will be fixed. Unfortunately history does not say that is a
given.
There are some
examples where the mess has changed. Carter replaced by Reagan, and
some of the Carter mess was fixed. There were some positives with
Clinton replacing Bush 1. There were some positives with Bush 2 being
replaced by Obama. There were positives with Trump replacing both
Obama and Biden. There were major positives with Washington
replacing the King of England.
But there are many
things that kept happening after the replacement with the exception
of Washington’s replacing the King. The difference between
Washington and the others is that the relics of the legislature still
remained. Party membership does not matter. Our country’s founders
did not envision long continuous careers in being a legislator. The
position of legislator was designed to be art time and not year
round. The congress met every other year with the exception of
emergencies then the met shortly to deal with the emergency. There
was no congressional salary, just a Per Diem.
The legislators had
to live under the laws they created. Now we have legislators who
don’t live long enough after they retire to live under their rules.
The president can do
many things and is limited by term limits and that is well. We only
had one president that seemed to want to be president forever and the
constitution was changed to prevent that. (Well maybe two, Obama
seems to have something up his sleeve.) It would seem like the
constitution needs to be changed to fix this problem.
It was easier to
change the constitution to create term limits for the president as it
was five hundred plus legislators against one. However to create an
amendment to limit legislators terms is five hundred plus against
five hundred plus. How many of the career politicians are ready to
fire themselves?
Legislators only
seem to have the nerve to delegate their responsibilities to the
administrative state. They can do that and still keep their cozy
Washington DC existence. They have made it easier to sell the
constituency that replacing them would hurt them therefore they get
reelected.
As with all things
government there needs to be a will. Regardless of who is president
next, just like regardless who is governor next, is there a will for
people to allow themselves to let others represent them? Only when
will to change exists will there be the possibility of “this sorry
mess being will be over permanently.”
